Mac cathmhaoil

Postby Kesho В» 10.02.2020

The following appears to be the most clear and correct opinion relative to this point : Cathmhaoil within the time allowed to the arbitrators they make their award, this shall be considered as the real award : if they make no award, the umpirage shall then take place : in this case there cathmhaoil be no clashing or confusion of authority'with mac to czthmhaoil, and the umpire has no concurrence of authority absolutely, but conditionally only, if the arbitrators make no award within the time cathmhaojl for the purpose.

It provides information on the Mac Cathmhaoil clan of Tyrone and a branch of the family which settled in the Wicklow and Kildare area in the s under the name of Caulfield. The Caulfield name is still to be found in the area, and hopefully this can help members of the family trace their ancestors at least back to the s. The work also records an otherwise unknown coat of arms for the Mac Cathmahoil family which became known as Caulfield and Campbell among other names in different areas from the s onwards.

If you have any details about the Caulfields of Levitstown, or you are looking for further information about this family, please contact me at: brianoleary82 gmail. It is much to be regretted that this useful and honourable custom, of keeping exactly the pedigrees of respectable families, has been so completely neglected of late years; if some competent person, with sufficient patience and leisure, wrote a succinct history of the families of Ireland of Milesian and other origin, there is very little doubt but that such a work would obtain ample support.

There are in this country a great number of families, not now possessed of titles or hereditary estates, whose descent and lineage, are ancient and gentle 1 as any in the land, and who still occupy an honourable position. The public documents, aided by those of private persons, which are very numerous, and could be easily obtained, are sufficient materials to rescue from oblivion many time-honoured names, and to produce a valuable genealogical history. The following short account of the Clan Cathmhaoil, 2 or Caulfield family, which was originally made out for private purposes, may serve as an example: it is not given as an infallible record, perfectly free from errors and mistake, for it will be easily understood that with a subject of this kind it is sometimes impossible to avoid them, particularly when we consider, that the old documents from which information is derived, are often nearly illegible; but does it follow that an entire pedigree is to rejected because some matters which are recorded are not quite correct?

If such a rule was admitted, no history or chronicle in the world, except the inspired writings, would escape. It may be well to observe that Keating says, that Cathmhaoil sprang from Fergall, son of Muireadhach, who was the son of Eogan; he of course means that this Fergall, Monarch of Ireland, AD , was a descendant of Muireadhach, not his direct successor and in the same way that Cathmhaoil was a descendant of Fergall, for Niall Glundubh, King of Ireland, about the year of our Lord , a descendant of King Fergall, had a son, Mortough, who had issue, Daniel, King of Ireland, AD , and another son, Cathmhaoil Caulfield , from whom sprang the entire Clan.

It may also be well to remark, that at the commencement of the 17 th century, General Sir Tobias Caulfield, ancestor of the Earls of Charlemont, obtained a large grant of land in Tyrone, for his services to the Crown in Ireland.

I have seen it stated that he was a native of Northumberland, and that the name had been Caveviel, or Cavefield, but have been unable to trace their origin to England, and I very much doubt the fact. Be this as it may, it is certain that the family, of whom I have given a short account, are not of English or foreign origin, but of pure Milesian; this cannot be questioned, as public and private documents confirm each other. The territory of the Caulfields was called Kinel Fearedaigh, and extended over a great portion of the Baronies of Omagh and Clogher, in Tyrone, of which they were Chiefs or Lords, besides which, they were chiefs of other Clans, and also Presidents of the Council of Ulster.

We follow the course of all historians, and proceed from the exalted race of Eogan. This rule has been followed from the 11 th to the 16 th century, which circumstance will account for the short interval between each. From to , the Chiefs, Edward, William and Hugh, took an active part in the wars against Queen Elizabeth, and during the last years of her reign, the contest raged with remarkable fury.

This included the territory of the Clan Cathmhaoil. A great many proofs might be adduced of the origin and identity of this Family, but the following opinion of Sir John St Leger, 12 appears particularly conclusive. Many members of this family filled the See of Clogher; the last to do so was Eugene, in , when his brother William was Dean of the same Diocese. From the time this family ceased to possess the territory of their ancestors their pedigree is not difficult to trace.

The abovementioned James left three sons: namely, A. Born about , married Anne, daughter of James Darcy 21 of Galway and dying in , had issue. He had four daughters. Ellen, married, Christopher Taylor of Swords, county Dublin. There remains John of Woolfstown 4 th son of William of Lemanstown , who married Mary Kavanagh; he died In , and left two sons: — 1.

Edward, 3. Grace and 7. Catherine Louisa. Of his eldest son, hereafter. Within the last half-century some members of this family have taken the Arms of the Caulfields, Earls of Charlemont, but without any right to do so; there appears to be no connexion, although the name is similar. Pedigree of the Caulfield family from King Milesius of Spain The following Inscription is to be found in the Church of St Sixtus in Rome, on a monument to the memory of one of the Eustace family Similarly, many Mac Cathmhaoils took the name Campbell in imitation of the famous Scottish clan, many of whom were planted in Ulster in the s.

Wicklow, which lies between Dunlavin and Hollywood. The name, Cavfel, was used by some of his descendants, even in the year , but almost all wrote it Caufield or Caulfield; other branches of the family continued to write it Cavell and Cafell. Although not in Co. Wicklow as stated, it is less than half a mile from the Kildare border with Wicklow, and nine miles from Lemonstown, Co.

Wicklow, home to the Caulfields. They acquired large possessions in Wicklow and Kildare, which were afterwards confiscateds. See the end of this notice. Kildare, which is 14 miles from Lemonstown. Kildare, is 5 miles south of the town of Athy. Perhaps significantly — or perhaps not — the townland of Levitstown is on the opposite bank of the River Barrow to Tankardstown, Co.

Since the 14 th century they have been located at Swords near Dublin. Post to Cancel. By continuing to use this website, you agree to their use. To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here: Cookie Policy.
